Journaling for mental wellbeing; our best tips

A few minutes with a pen can make a busy head feel quieter. Simple habits that help, from people who write every day.

Journaling is not a cure for anything, but it is one of the simplest ways we know to make room in a crowded mind. You do not need to be a writer. You only need a page and a few honest minutes.

Habits that make it stick

  • Write at the same time each day, even if only for five minutes.
  • Keep the journal somewhere you will see it, not in a drawer.
  • Do not reread straight away; let the words rest.
  • Finish with one small thing you are grateful for.

On harder days, a list is enough. Three things on your mind, three things you can do about them, and permission to leave the rest for tomorrow.

Paper is patient. It will wait for you to find the words.

If something feels heavier than a journal can hold, please talk to someone. The NHS mental health pages are a good place to start.
