From Tuscany to London; the origin of our journals
Every Companion begins as a hide in a small Tuscan tannery and ends on a workbench in London. This is the journey in between.
Our leather comes from a family tannery in the hills outside Florence, where hides are tanned slowly with vegetable extracts rather than rushed through in a day. It is a patient way of working, and you can feel it in the finished cover.
The colours are chosen with the tanners each season. Some, like Ink and Tan, stay with us year after year. Others arrive for a single run and are gone once the hides are used.
Leather that is made slowly ages beautifully.
Cut, stitched and finished in London
Once the hides reach London, each cover is cut by hand, its edges are burnished and the cord is fitted. Refills are printed in Britain on paper that takes a fountain pen without bleeding through.
- Vegetable-tanned Italian leather
- Hand-cut and finished in London
- Refillable, so the cover outlives the paper
It takes longer than it needs to, and that is rather the point. A journal is something you keep for years; it should be made by people who expect it to be.
