The Art of Giving Something Personal

From medieval love tokens to modern keepsakes, discover why the personal details have always made a gift more meaningful.

Personalised gifts have a surprisingly long history. Long before monogrammed luggage and engraved jewellery became fashionable, people found ways to give objects a meaning beyond their practical purpose.

In medieval Britain, posy rings were exchanged as tokens of love and friendship. These simple gold bands carried short inscriptions, often engraved on the inside, where the message was known only to the giver and recipient.

Centuries later, the Victorians took sentimental gifting to another level. Lockets containing miniature portraits or locks of hair became treasured keepsakes, while jewellery and small personal objects were engraved with initials, dates and messages.

A gift with meaning

What makes a gift personal isn't necessarily its value, but the connection to the person receiving it.

An engraved date might mark an important occasion. A particular colour could remind someone of a favourite place. A short phrase might reference a shared joke, or a symbol might mark a new beginning or a wish for good fortune.

Sometimes the meaning is obvious. Sometimes it's understood by just two people, and that's part of the appeal.

Something to use every day

Not every meaningful gift needs to be a treasured heirloom tucked away in a drawer. There's something equally lovely about giving an object that becomes part of everyday life. A favourite pen, a well-made bag or a notebook carried between work, home and holidays.

It's an idea we particularly like at Cartelle.

Our Companion is a refillable leather notebook system, designed to be used for years. The notebooks inside can be changed as they're filled, while the leather cover stays.

And there are plenty of ways to make one personal, from choosing the leather and cord colours to adding embossed initials or a talisman with a particular meaning.

The finishing touch

Perhaps the simplest way to make a gift personal is to add a message. A few words explaining why you chose the gift, recalling a shared memory or wishing someone well in their next adventure.

It doesn't have to be elaborate. Sometimes a few well-chosen words are all you need.
